This already passes in master, 3.0, and 2.7, but would fail in
ruby 2.6 as it segfaults instead of raising an exception. I think
it's good to have a test for this to catch possible future
regressions.

This removes the related tests, and puts the related specs behind
version guards.  This affects all code in lib, including some
libraries that may want to support older versions of Ruby.
